23. Which way now?

Yesterday we went for a lovely walk with extended family. About 20 adults and a handful of playful children meandered through the beautiful Perthshire countryside. As little boys do, Jacob and his friend ran off ahead, exploring three times the distance we adults covered in the same time. On the return leg, we realised they had run beyond our eyesight, at the crossroads to a network of varying pathways that offered a myriad of different routes. Which one had they taken? Was it the right one to return them to the starting point? The drama was short-lived, as moments later we discovered Jacob’s older playmate had walked the path before. And because of this, he knew exactly where they were heading and exactly how to get there. …

Tomorrow we will be on our way to London for the appointment with Harley Street. It’s weird to think that this time next week, I could be on the surgeons table. We know the next 48 hours have the potential to impact the rest of our lives. Good job then, we don’t have to work it all out, fix it or worry about the outcome. We’ve total security in a God who will do all that for us. This belief is not to be confused with putting a head in the sand; we know the decisions we now make will be crucial. Some have asked how I can be so sure in the circumstances? The answer is simple: Sorting this is not my job. The research has been done and we now know the risks, consequences, and ins and outs of different possible scenarios. Conventional, alternative and adjunctive solutions alike all offer different paths, viewpoints and destinations. But ultimately, God has the master plan already.

After all the analysis last week, we’re now armed with all the human understanding we can muster. So this week, I’ve focussed on being armed with all the spiritual understanding possible at this stage. Instead of being sucked into answering the currently un-answerable question of what we should do, I’ve simply focussed on being in God’s presence, in His word and in worship – tuning into spirit not the mind, will and emotions of my soul. If I am to hear the voice of wisdom needed, this is the only way I will dial down the noise that would try to interfere with this frequency. This has enabled celestial insight – almost as if heaven is holding its breath.

There are so many things we don’t yet fully understand, but there’s one thing of which I am certain. Like Jacob and his friend yesterday, God has walked this out before; He knows precisely where He’s taking us and knows exactly which route to take us down. Our prayers are now for the discernment to hear and the courage to follow where He leads us. So where will He take us? He will take us to the promised land.
